QuoteThese
challenges involve hunting down various animals them killing and
skinning them. As you proceed through the levels of this challenge
series, the types of animals will become more difficult to rare and
difficult to find.
Starting Requirements
* Kill and skin a coyote.
Level Rewards
* Level 5: Master Hunter (Unlocks Buffalo Rifle)
* Level 10: Legendary Hunter (Unlocks ability to harvest vittles
from animals to create a health item)
General Strategies
* Purchase some bait at the General Store, set it in an area where
you're looking for a particular animal, then stand back about 30 feet.
It should draw any nearby animals to it.
Rank 1Collect 5 coyote pelts: kill 5 coyotes, skin the carcasses and collect
the pelts.
Completion Tips
* Search the northern hills and mountains of North Austin.
* Coyotes are best hunted at night, as this is when they most often
come out to wander the hills.
* Listen of the dog-like squealing noise they make as a sign that
they are near by.
Rank 2Collect 5 deer pelts: kill 5 deer and skin them.
Completion Tips
* Deer are very common in many areas of North Austin and West
Elizabeth.
* You can usually spot them directly off the trails and roads.
* Be sure to skin each deer after shooting them to collect their
pelts.
Rank 3Kill 5 wolves with your melee knife and collect 5 pelts.
Completion Tips
* Wolves prowl many areas of the world in Red Dead Redemption. Check
out the above Map for their various locations.
* This challenge involves you killing wolves with your melee knife
which can be dangerous. Do not attack a pack of wolves with your knife.
If you happen upon a pack, shoot a couple of them so you only have to
knife 1 or 2 at a time. Any more than than and you will surely get
outnumbered and killed.
* It's best not to try and get all 5 knife kills in one pack of
wolves. Get a kill or two and if you become surrounded, pull out your
gun and shoot the rest to ensure you escape alive. Then simply go find
another pack and repeat.
Rank 4Collect 5 boar tusks and 3 armadillo carapaces in addition to those you
already have.
Completion Tips
* Wild Boar are pretty rare in the game. Search for them in the very
northeast of New Austin or in the Tall Trees of West Elizabeth.
* Armadillos can be found in many areas, the hardest thing is simply
spotting them. Look for these little creatures darting across or along
the trails and roads.
* Be sure to remember to skin each boar and armadillo you kill while
attempting to complete this challenge.
Rank 5Kill 2 cougars with your melee knife and collect 2 cougar pelts.
Completion Tips
* Don't try to knife more than one cougar at a time. If there are
more than one around, kill one with a gun and then focus on knifing the
remaining one.
* To help make things easier, use your Dead Eye to shoot the cougar
twice in the body (not the head) and then chase it and finish it off
with a melee knife.
* If the cougar is running away from you and you can't seem to catch
up to it to knife it, use your lasso to stall it. This will give you a
few moments to run up and stab it.
Rank 6Collect 5 raccoon pelts, 5 skunk pelts, and 5 fox pelts in addition to
those you already have.
Completion Tips
* These three animal don't often roam around in the open. You
generally have to ride/walk through tall grass to stir them into moving.
* In addition to the locations shown on the map above, Raccoons and
Foxes can be also found in the Tall Trees area.
* In addition to the locations shown on the map above, Skunks can be
found in Rio Bravo and Diez Coronas.
* All three of these animals are more easily found at night.
* Search the forked trail just southwest of MacFarlane's Ranch at
night for skunks.
* The southern area of the Great Plains (north of Theives' Landing)
is another great spot to locate Foxes off the beaten path.
Rank 7Collect 5 elk meat and 5 bighorn skins in addition to those you already
have.
Completion Tips
* Both of these animals are commonly found along the western side of
Tall Trees.
* Bighorns are often around rocky ledges.
* Know that Elk are tough and fast. They can survive a couple body
shots to try to aim for the head to bring them down before they can
escape.
Rank 8Kill a bear with your melee knife and collect a bear pelt.
Completion Tips
* There are plenty of bears in the snowy hills of Tall Trees.
* Shoot a bear with a couple of pistol shots to soften it up before
attempting to finish it off with a melee knife.
* When the bear is fairly wounded, it will flee. Chase the bear and
use the lasso to stall it so you can catch up and knife it.
Rank 9Search Ojo Del Diablo for "Khan," the legendary jaguar, and collect his
pelt.
Completion Tips
* Khan is located in Mexico near the Ojo Del Diablo.
* Khan should appear automatically on your map as you venture around
Ojo Del Diablo. If he doesn't, use bait to lure him out.
* This jaguar is incredibly fast so don't try to face him on foot.
If you can simply keep your distance and shoot him from afar.
* Battling Khan on horseback combined with Dead Eye is pretty easy.
Riding on a horse gives you a good high vantage point so you can see
Khan coming and allows you to more easily move to avoid him while trying
to shoot him.
* Kill Khan and skin him to complete this challenge.
Rank 10Search Aurora Basin, Stillwater Creek, and Nekoti Rock for "Lobo" the
legendary wolf, "Gordo" the legendary boar, and "Brumas" the legendary
bear and collect their pelts.
Completion Tips
* For the final Master Hunter Challenge, you'll need to track down
and kill three legendary animals.
* Generally these animals will automatically appear on your mini-map
when you enter and wander around their habitat.
* If they don't appear, use bait to attract each animal.
* These animals won't go quietly, so be sure to shoot them at a
distance. Don't try to knife them!
* Using Dead Eye makes all three a lot easier.
* You'll find Gorbo (the boar) in Stillwater Creek.
* Lobo (the wolf) will be wandering around Aurora Basin.
* Brumas (the bear) is a bit different. Follow the steep mountain
trail at Nekoti Rock up to the mountain top plateau and cave. Stand on
the rock on the ledge that over looks the forest below. Pay attention to
your mini-map as Brumas will more than likely come charging out of his
cave at you. If Brumas does not appear up here, try camping and coming
back or try setting back at the base of the mountain (you cannot set
bait on the mountain top).
* Be careful when facing Brumas on the mountaintop, it's a small
area and he's a big bear. Use Dead Eye with a shotgun to bring the beast
down.
