Ben is a troubled kid in high school. His classmates pester him because he is different. Ben is autistic. His life is ruled by schema and order and everything that does not fit into his fixed patterns upsets him. At home Ben's world consists of a computer game, in which he can be anything he wants to be. In his case, a strong hero that runs around to protect another player, a female. At home Ben's world is good. When events at school turn another shade of dirty he collapses and things will have to change.
This film is fairly difficult as it attempts to express the world of a person that is more or less permanently locked in his own world. It also makes itself to be more difficult by having part of the film play as an interview with various people. But, it can be said that it does all of this very well. The scenes where Ben is portrayed show his personal cage very well, both by the excellent film making and the way the actor plays him. The "interview" scenes flash by quickly, the way they should, and they connect the various scenes of the film very well. The main story line then is not really a story but mainly a report of what happens and that works very well given the complex theme of the film.
