've played a lot of Resistance: Fall of Man on the PlayStation 3. In
fact, several of us at Tom's Hardware Guide have spent several days'
worth of game time with the title in online multiplayer mode. And the
sad thing is, that even after all that time, I'm really no better at
Resistance than I was when I first played the game a few months back.
Sure, I've improved some; I can actually jump into a 40-person
multiplayer death match and score more than one or two kills before
it's all over. But I'm still not very good, and I probably never will
be.

Why? Probably because I'm a PC gamer at heart, and for me, nothing
beats a good mouse and keyboard. I don't mind the PlayStation
controller for God of War, for example, but only the most exquisitely
designed shooters have pleased me on the consoles. Like most gamers, I
prefer the precision of a mouse to target my weapons instead of trying
to balance the thumb sticks with my exhausted, aching digits.
However, SplitFish's new controller, the FragFX, has given me a
glimmer of hope. The company paid a visit to the Tom's Hardware Guide
lab recently to demonstrate the FragFX, which essentially is a mouse
and keypad system designed to replace the console controller for gamers
like myself. The FragFX is the PlayStation 3 version of the company's
EdgeFX controller for the PS2.
FragFX Review : SplitFish FragFX Controller Review Fragfx1
SplitFish's new PS3 controller, the FragFX

Here's how it works. The FragFX comes with a mouse and a small
laptop mouse pad, as well as a connected left-hand grip controller that
looks similar to the Wii Nunchuk. Imagine being on your couch for a
second: the mouse pad sits on your lap, and you control the perspective
and targeting on the screen with the mouse, while using left grip's
thumb stick to move forward, backward, left and right.
There's more, too. The FragFX mouse has a set of PS3 controller
buttons on the left side of the device, as well as a zoom button for
targeting, and a start button on the top of the mouse. Plus, the left
hand grip has a small button pad below the thumb stick. Best of all are
the speed dial and "Frag button" on the grip - the speed dial can
actually slow down or accelerate overall gameplay, while the Frag
button allows players to lower the sensitivity of the mouse.
But does it actually work? That was my question when I first saw
SplitFish CEO Francisco Schipperheijn and vice president Jason Johnson
demonstrate the new controller. Once I got a chance to sit down and
give the FragFX a try on Resistance, I got my answer very quickly: yes,
it works quite well. Like any new controller scheme, it took me a few
minutes to get the gist of the FragFX, but once I did, I found the
controller was extremely easy to use.

FragFX Review : SplitFish FragFX Controller Review Splitfish-fragfx-20070625042852350_640w

No inicio tive problemas porque meti o limite
Aconselho tb a

sitio onde têm a consola.

  • v.2: Improved mouse sensitivity
  • v.2: Improved motion sensitivity
  • v.2: Improved mouse buttons

left, right, up and down for that same PC style game play experience on
    the PlayStation 3.
  • The mouse is optimized for navigation within the recently announced PlayStation Home virtual world.
  • A menu mode on the mouse allows it to double as a regular
mouse during menu selections. A lap mouse pad is included with the
FragFX v.2 to allow for comfortable play in a living room setting.
  • The UNIQUE left hand re-programmable grip (nicknamed the

  • The FragChuck also offers a game speed dial and frag button.
When the frag button is pressed it slows the mouse down to incremental

FragFX Review : SplitFish FragFX Controller Review Fragfxv2_b

Just like many gamers on the PlayStation 3 already, you can be
fortunate enough to check out SplitFish Gameware’s FragFX controller
for the system. This innovative custom controller is designed with
shooters in mind and aims to bring some of the essence of PC gaming to
the console. Can PC gamers feel comfortable with this hybrid of the
PlayStation SixAxis controller and the PC gaming mouse? We investigated
and found just how hard or easy it will be for many others who are
trying to find the perfect balance between PC and console gaming.

The FragFX is a true hybrid of a console controller and the computer
mouse control scheme. While this may not sound like a match made in
heaven, all the included features and customizable options allow for
the FragFX to be extremely versatile for whatever type of shooting game
you may be playing with. The FragFX comes with a mouse that when moved
acts as the right analog stick, the left and right mouse buttons play
out as the R1 and R2 buttons accordingly, and in the middle the R3 and
Start buttons are positioned as opposed to a traditional scroll wheel
on Windows PCs.

With some slight sensitivity adjustments the right hand mouse can work
perfectly in nearly any shooter found on the PlayStation 3, it will
take some time, however to get a good comfortable feeling by adjusting
the sensitivity both in-game and through the FragFx’s own settings.
While PC gamers will love the mouse component of the FragFX, many will
possibly be sceptical at first of the “FragChuck” that is used by your
left hand. This controller looks like a Wiimote nunchuck, but functions
and acts like a crossbreed of a detached Joystick and PlayStation 3
SixAxis controller. On this portion of the FragFx you have your left
analog stick that functions like the standard control, also found on
the “FragChuck” is the L1 and L2 buttons that are positioned below a
unique control to the FragFX, the frag button, which when pressed slows
down the sensitivity for the mouse control to allow for increased level
of accuracy when trying to make the most precise shots with a rifle or
sniper weapon.

FragFX Review : SplitFish FragFX Controller Review Thumb_SF-FragFX_V2_A.1249877923
The “FragChuck” also makes use of the PlayStation 3 SixAxis control but
with a slight twist. By using a simple programming function that can be
done in-game, you can allow your motion to mimic any in-game action.
Want to toss a grenade? Program your controller and make a flicking
move and a grenade will be tossed. Want to take a more close and
personal style of gameplay? Then program your “FragChuck” to act as a
melee/bash control and flick your controller, and you’ll be cracking
skulls in no time. While programming this function can be done in-game,
you can completely program your FragFx to fully customize each button
to do what you want by downloading a simple PC program and connecting
your FragFX to your PC’s USB port. One major suggestion is programming
the R2 (left mouse button) to act as the L1 button which in many
shooters brings up the ironsites or a closer more accurate firing mode
also used for the sniping class in many games. With a fully
customizable control layout, sensitivity adjustment, and the SixAxis
and frag button the FragFX can feel comfortable for any gamer wanting
to make the jump from PC to PlayStation 3 gaming.

The second version of the FragFX comes with many improvements over the
previous version which gives it an improved optical mouse, frag button,
mouse & motion sensitivity, mouse buttons, d-pad, and more games
that are supported fully, all of these improvements make for a better
product overall, but how can it stand up when it comes time to frag out
with your chuck out?

While using the FragFX, a lot of trial and error will occur as you
attempt to adjust the sensitivity and button mapping to your liking.
The default button layout works well in most situations, but for the
best feel and to improve your gaming skills, most will want to go fully
customized to do things your own way. When testing the FragFX on some
of the most popular first and third person shooters on the PlayStation
3, gamers can, after some slight adjustments, improve their kill/death
ratio, and for those wanting to take the long range rifleman or sniping
route can become the most deadly killer on the battlefield.

There are a few downsides to the FragFX, however. Any gamers planning
to game at the comfort of their own couch will be at a major
disadvantage, as a large flat surface will be needed to make full use
of the mouse control. A hard surfaced mouse pad is included but even
holding that on your lap will feel uncomfortable, even when pulling up
a coffee table or tables of similar height/style that is common in most
households’ things will not improve greatly. To get the best enjoyment
and use out of the FragFX you will want to setup your gaming area at
the typical mid waist height to have comfort and skill at its best that
is found in traditional PC gaming. Using any vehicles in some of your
larger scale shooter games will also be a challenge depending on the
control function for that specific game, flying is by far the largest
challenge and is to be avoided at all costs when using the FragFX
unless you want large obtuse manoeuvrability.

FragFX Review : SplitFish FragFX Controller Review Thumb_SF-FragFX_V2_B.1249877931
Gamers coming from a long standing PC gaming background will probably
enjoy the FragFX the most, sure there is no WASD or other keyboard
controls, but the FragFX is currently the best option out there for a
mixture of the two gaming types. Long time console players or those who
have a mixed PC and console gaming background will find things feel a
bit odd and will probably need a lot more trial and error to feel truly
comfortable with the FragFX. For gamers wanting to bring PC gaming
controls to a machine that supports many of the same PC titles without
the hassle of Windows, or spending thousands of dollars on system
upgrades then the FragFX is for you.

*Our review of the FragFX was tested primarily on Battlefield: Bad
Company, Battlefield 1943, and some testing done with Killzone 2 and
Socom: Confrontation.

Pros:

  • Best FPS controller on the market for consoles
  • Frag button is a "win" button
  • On-the-fly sensitivity adjustment

Cons:

  • USB cord at 10FT is short for 42"+ TV setups
  • Optical mouse isn't ambidextrous
  • Only available for PS3, no Xbox360 support

Score:9.5/10 EDITOR'S CHOICE - Must own peripheral for the FPS fan

“That
ain’t right.” That’s the collective outcry of any PC gamer when handed
a dual analog stick gamepad for a first person shooter game. I’ve been
a PC gamer for the majority of my life and even with the advancements
of today’s controller setup, there’s still no replicating the feel of a
mouse and keyboard experience for the first person shooter genre.
There have been many companies out there that have tried to solve the
FPS controller issue. From adding a trackball to your controller,
modeling the controller like a gun, or adding a breakout box so you can
use a real mouse and keyboard. The one thing all these products have
in common is that none of them work particularly well. That’s where
SplitFish comes along.
Splitfish Gameware is a gaming peripheral company based out of
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (three hours from our headquarters) and first
debut its FragFX controller in March 2007. At the time, the FragFX was
the natural evolution of the EdgeFX, a similar mouse and analog
controller for the PS2. But in March 2009, Splitfish improved on their
original design and released the FragFX
V.2. So is this franken-controller worth your money and, more
importantly, does it deliver an accurate experience of PC FPS gameplay
for the PS3? In short, yes.

FragFX Review : SplitFish FragFX Controller Review Flyer_v2_en-724x1024
The V.2 is almost identical to the V.1. Both have an optical mouse
attached to what essentially is half of a dual shock controller that
resembles the Wii’s nunchuk peripheral. The optical mouse is right
handed only with your standard face buttons on the side near your thumb
and the R1/R2 triggers mapped to the left/right click buttons. The
left handed “fragchuck” has your analog thumbstick for movement and a
D-Pad for in game functions. L1/L2 triggers are present as triggers on
the “fragchuck”. The V.2 comes with a lap-pad designed as a dock for
your “fragchuck” and a mouse pad for play while you’re sitting on a
couch but this isn’t necessary for the V.2 to operate. The whole
assembly is connected to your PS3 via a 10 foot long USB cord and is
generally adequate for smaller living rooms. Personally, I needed a
longer cord for my 46″ HDTV which my PS3 is connected to and a USB
extension cord did the trick.
Besides having a mouse to control aiming and looking functions for
PS3 games, which is already a leap beyond other control schemes, the
V.2 has a few more unique features. First is the sensitivity dial on
the fragchuck, which enables the user to adjust the sensitivity of the
optical mouse irregardless of the in game settings. The best results
are achieved when the dial is adjusted in conjunction with in game
settings but a little trial and error will have you at your preferred
sensitivity. The second innovation is the “Frag” button. This button,
located on the Fragchuck, will slow down the mouse movements when
pressed to allow for increased accuracy during critical moments such as
taking a headshot. This could be the fabled “win” button that
represents gaming’s holy grail.
So how well does the V.2 function in game and does it actually
recreate a mouse and keyboard experience for the PS3? To answer that,
I ran through four different games with the V.2 where before, I would
have only used the dual shock 3 to control. The games tested were
Battlefield 1943, Call of Duty: World at War, Uncharted, and Killzone
2. These are games with varying degrees of gunplay elements and would
be well suited for a mouse and keyboard setup. The only wildcard is
Uncharted as there are many more elements than gunplay to the game but
that title was added as a baseline comparison.
Being of a PC FPS gamer, I’m used to playing in twitch games such as
UT3, TF2, and the likes. The V.2 replicates the mouse controls
relatively well but will not replace an authentic mouse and keyboard
setup. But when compared to a standard dual analog stick control, the
V.2 is light-years ahead in accuracy, control, and reliability. The
best comparison I can offer is this: if using a mouse and keyboard is
like driving a car where it goes where you steer it and using a
standard controller was like steering a paddle boat; then the V.2 is
like riding a skateboard where it goes in the general direction you
point to but requires practice and a little effort.
In a purely empirical sense of the test, my kills in all games
(except for Uncharted where there was no multiplayer) increased but at
the least 35% (CoD: WaW) and on average 52% over the period of a few
hours of play. There is no doubt that the V.2 is the best FPS
controller available for the PS3 to date and is as close to the real
thing as you can get. There is a slight learning curve to using the
V.2 and will take you some time to adjust the settings to suit your
play style but it’s well worth the time. The V.2 (and the V.1) are
both firmware upgradable so you can be sure future games and features
will be supported. With full six-axis control in the Fragchuck,
dedicated optical mouse, a “frag” button, and an independent
sensitivity dial, the FragFX V.2 is the Excalibur to the FPS gamer’s
King Arthur.

The only real issues with the V.2 is the ethics of it all. Does it
mean that you’re cheating if you’re using the FragFX in a match,
especially when there’s such things as the Frag button? The same
argument could be said of players that use a fightstick for Street
Fighter. Personally, I’m for the idea that whoever has the bigger
stick, wins. If you own a PS3 and you like to play FPS games, you owe
it to yourself to import/buy a FragFX V.2. At $79.99 US MSRP, it will
be the best money you’ve ever spent for a controller and will make all
Xbox360 fanboys cry in their sleep!

Citação :
Over all I found the frag fx to be an excellent controller, and is
worth the price if you want to use a mouse while gaming on your
playstation 3.

Pros: Helps increase accuracy(unless you are bad at video games,
nothing will help then); Increases turning speed significantly; Buttons
are remapable; Motion sensitivity is remapable; L3 and R3 are hot
swappable

Cons: Mouse pad is terrible(can use it in lap, or on a table);
D-pad is terrible in every way, its position is wrong and it miss hits
directions

Over all I think the frag fx is a good product, even with its few
flaws. The mouse and nunchuk work great so long as you read the manual
and set it up properly.
